Wonder Literary Essay 2

I think some important ideas for the book wonder by R.J. Palacio is to not judge a book by their cover. Another one is don't be a bully. A third one is to not think that someone is bad on the inside because they look weird on the outside. Wonder is a book about a boy having to deal with a facial disfigurement. I think the theme of this book is don't judge a person by their appearance.

In the story, a bully named Julian always seems to pick on him. For example, in the chapter Lamb to the Slaughter, August and Julian were taking about Star Wars and Julian called him but didn't really call him Darth Sideous. This shows that bullies can do things to people that aren't that nice. August knows that "In Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith, Darth Sideous's face gets burned by sith lightning and becomes totally deformed" . In the book House of Robots by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein, the bully Cooper Elliot is always mean to the main character, Sammy Hayes-Rodriguez.

Also in the story, everybody was staring at August because of his face. For example, in the chapter Locks and in every chapter of Part 1, everybody is staring at him because of his face. This shows that everybody was judging the book of August by his cover. In House of Robots, Sammy's mom builds a robot named E and everybody stares at him because he's a robot. But later in House of Robots, everybody (except Cooper Elliot, the bully) loves E because he's AWESOME!!

By the end of the story, everybody is nice to August because he's really nice on the inside so nobody except Julian doesn't like him. For example, in the chapter Alien, Amos, Miles, and Henry defend him from some older kids who were making fun of him. They were calling him names like "Gollum! Alien! An orc!" and "Freddie Krueger" This shows that nobody is weird on the inside just because they look weird on the outside. In House of Robots, E is loved by everybody, and he is a robot. Also, Cooper Elliot gets arrested for stealing E.

The theme of this book is don't judge a person by their appearance. That really comes into play for most bullies like Julian Albans and Cooper Elliot. In House of Robots, Sammy is also kind of a bully to E. I am also basically a bully to my own sister. Bullies always pick their victims because they're weaker than them. Stand up for yourself, and they might (and probably will) stop.
